A defense official has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the possible threats associated with Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret information in all cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
The minister explained that the ministry is “looking into” cars from China within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in every modern cars.
Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified level in any car, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
The wider defence situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in all areas of government operations, including transport use to discussions practices.
